IASTM / Graston Method

IASTM can help treat your chronic pain.

Do you have chronic back or neck pain, or have you recently had a sprain or strain? If so, you understand how limiting and painful daily activities can be. Whether you have acute or chronic pain, instrumented-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) provides pain relief and numerous other benefits!

For acute and chronic pain, our physical therapists at Touch of Life Physical Therapy and Acupuncture use IASTM. Pain is frequently the result of multiple variables interacting with one another. Fortunately, our team understands the interdependence of our bodies’ systems and how to use any tool necessary to achieve the results you deserve!

Our physical therapists scrape the skin with a special device ( a plastic or metal tool) to increase blood flow to the site of pain and surrounding tissues. You will also notice a decrease in inflammation and an improvement in the condition that is causing you pain.

In the case of back and neck pain, for example, it is very common for people to also feel tension and restrictions in the soft tissues surrounding the spinal joints. IASTM in these areas will help you feel less pain, be more mobile, and overall feel better!

What is IASTM and Graston Method?

IASTM is a cutting-edge technique that allows our physical therapists at Touch of Life Physical Therapy and Acupuncture to effectively treat scar tissue, fascial restrictions, and range of motion limitations that cause pain.

This method uses specially designed stainless steel and/or plastic instruments to detect and address areas of soft tissue tension, restrictions, or chronic inflammation. One well-known form of IASTM is the Graston Technique, which uses patented stainless steel tools and specific strokes to treat adhesions and scar tissue.

A specialized lotion or cream is typically applied to the skin to allow the instruments to glide smoothly, promoting muscle relaxation and tissue release. IASTM stimulates blood flow and helps break down adhesions to support the body’s natural healing process.

This technique requires proper training and is highly effective when performed by a skilled practitioner. Different speeds and pressures may be used depending on your needs, and treatment should not be painful or cause bruising.
