CranioSacral Therapy (CST)

CranioSacral Therapy (CST)

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle and relaxing manual therapy technique to balance the entire body and central nervous system (CNS). The CST therapist can check the body restriction through palpation skills (sensing the abnormal tissue tone) for connective tissues, joints, and Craniosacral Rhythm.

Once the abnormal body restriction is noticed, the therapist can release the key lesion (The area creating body tension the most) in order to restore the natural motion of the restricted body part. Patients can experience deep relaxation, pain relief, increased mobility and function after the session.

How can CST restore body balance?

Lots of diseases and pain stem from over-activated Sympathetic Nervous System (flight and fight response) in the process of dealing with physical and mental stress. If this state is sustained for a long time, the body is getting stiffer and tender with decreased blood flow.

CST is an excellent tool to turn down Sympathetic Nervous System to relieve stress and activate Parasympathetic Nervous system to improve relaxation.

What can be treated with CST?

It can be very effective in treating a wide range of conditions including:

  • Migraine Headaches
  • Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Motor-Coordination Impairments
  • Colic
  • Autism
  • Central Nervous System Disorders
  • Orthopedic Problems
  • Concussions and Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia
  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Infantile Disorders
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Emotional Difficulties
  • Stress and Tension-Related Problems
  • Fibromyalgia and other Connective-Tissue Disorders
  • Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
  • Neurovascular or Immune Disorders
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Post-Surgical Dysfunction

What can you expect in the session?

The session will begin with checking on any restrictions in the body and the flow of craniosacral rhythm (CSR). Once the main restriction in the body is noticed, the therapist will mobilize cranial bones, sacrum and other body parts to release the tension and restore CSR.
By mobilizing cranial bones and sacrum, the therapist can achieve releasing restrictions surrounding the spinal cord and central nervous system.

This light touch can help to create balance within the CNS, by inhibiting the Sympathetic Nervous System (flight or flight response), and activating the Parasympathetic Nervous System (rest and digest), it reduces stress within the body, decreases pain and promotes normal function.

CST can be beneficial and safe for everyone including newborns, to the elderly population.

Having Synergy Effect with Other Treatment Techniques

There are other treatment techniques that will bring a synergy effect when being used in combination with CST.

Is specifically manual mobilization of the fascial structure of a muscle, or between muscles. It is a type of connective tissue mobilization. Myofascial release is application of sustained pressure to reduce fascial restrictions within the muscle to relieve pain, improve range of motion, relax the muscle, and relieve neurological dysfunction.

A gentle manual mobilization of the fascial system that surrounds and supports the organs. Adhesions may be a result of surgeries, trauma, repetitive micro-trauma from poor posture or body mechanics, or illness, which can result in fascial restrictions between organs, resulting in pain and dysfunction. Visceral manipulation uses gentle palpation and mobilization techniques to evaluate and correct the imbalances.

A manual technique that uses light pressure with soft pumping movements in the direction of lymph nodes to help increase lymph flow, removing harmful substances from tissues which improves metabolism, and will support optimal immune function

Treatment at Touch of Life Physical Therapy is unique.
We perform CST in combination with Myofascial Release and current physical therapy techniques such as joint mobilization and functional exercise program which will result in faster and long-term effect.

  1. Identifying the key lesions in your body
  2. Resolve the key lesion with CST and Myofascial release to decrease body tension
  3. Enhancing blood flow and mobility in the joint and connective tissues
  4. Improve functional abilities with the customized exercise program
  5. Learning stress regulation method using stretching and breathing techniques
